What Is STEM?

STEM careers are at the forefront of innovation and technological advancement, driving progress in various industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, and environmental science. 

Countries that have adopted STEM as part of their syllabus teach students how to integrate these four subjects to recreate and solve problems in the real world. By focusing on STEM education, students develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills and the technical expertise needed to tackle complex challenges and contribute to developments in our ever-changing world. 

The Diversity Gap Starts In Early Years

Despite many efforts worldwide, STEM careers remain mainly occupied by certain demographic groups. Women, ethnic minorities, and individuals from low-income backgrounds are the most underrepresented in STEM fields. Although these differences are more obvious at later stages in their careers, this gap starts as early as middle school. It progresses through high school as well as throughout higher education and the workforce. This means there is an urgent need for interventions to ensure accessibility to STEM careers for everyone. 

Young people from all backgrounds should be made aware of the many opportunities available in STEM careers. Many young women and individuals from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups decide against pursuing a career in STEM due to the false belief that there aren’t enough opportunities. Now that we understand why the gap exists, we have to uncover why closing this diversity gap is important for the STEM industry.

Diversity In STEM Careers Drives Innovation

Decades of research have proven that diverse groups are more likely to come up with more innovative solutions compared to homogeneous groups. Not only do different backgrounds result in different viewpoints, but working with people from different backgrounds seems to create a mindset for innovation within an individual. This means that diversity, in a group, improves performance in the long run by improving adaptability. 

Diversity in a group of scientists or researchers is the cause of breakthroughs. Not how clever the group is, but their ability to see the problem from different viewpoints. The individuals in a diverse group will think differently, meaning they can apply their knowledge in contrasting ways while still working and operating as one unit. STEM careers mainly involve researching and solving problems, and diversity will help to produce a mixed bag of possible solutions. A lack of diversity in STEM would lead to a lack of innovativeness, adaptability and growth.

Diversity Address Social And Economic Inequalities

Increasing diversity in STEM careers can help address broader social and economic inequalities. Diverse teams are more likely to consider the needs of a wider range of communities, leading to more inclusive products and solutions. For instance, a person from a lower-income background would be able to identify a problem commonly experienced by individuals from a similar background. This is brought on by an understanding of the issue through lived experiences.  If teams of researchers are made up of STEM professionals with different experiences, this opens up the possibility of solving problems to benefit a greater number of people. 

Many companies are investing in training women and minority groups around the world. As the need for diversity in STEM becomes more recognised, we can expect more opportunities to appear. This commitment to developing STEM skills in underrepresented groups not only improves companies’ performance but also helps create a better and more inclusive society for everyone. Diversity Will Help Meet Future Workforce Demands

According to a report by EngineeringUK, the demand for STEM professionals in the UK is expected to grow, with an estimated requirement of 2.7 million additional STEM workers by 2027. These additional workers will be necessary to meet the needs of a rapidly advancing technological landscape. This is a high growth rate when compared to the average for other occupations. To meet this demand, companies will need to tap into all available talent pools, including those from underrepresented groups. 

By broadening participation, there can be a steady pipeline of skilled workers who are ready to solve the technological challenges of the future. Encouraging diversity in STEM careers will lead to a wide range of perspectives and ideas, fostering innovation and ensuring that the solutions that are developed are inclusive and effective for society. Investing in the education and training of young people from diverse backgrounds is not just a necessity for economic growth but also a step towards future preparedness.

Barriers To STEM Careers

Seeing someone who looks like you succeed can be incredibly motivating. Role models provide tangible proof that success is achievable. In STEM careers, this is particularly important to dispel myths and stereotypes that might demotivate young people from pursuing a career in STEM. This is more true for students from minority or underrepresented groups who may lack role models in STEM. 

Also, schools in low-income areas often have fewer resources, less access to advanced STEM courses and outdated technology. This educational gap can make it harder for students to pursue a career in STEM. The schools may also lack extracurricular STEM programmes, which further limits students’ opportunities to explore their interests and develop their skills. 

Finally, stereotypes about who “belongs” in STEM can discourage students from pursuing a career in this field. These biases can affect hiring and promotion decisions, making it harder for candidates from diverse backgrounds to advance in their careers and also become role models for young people. Whether implicit or explicit, these stereotypes can create a challenging environment for those who do not fit the traditional image of a STEM professional. 

How Parents Can Encourage Diversity In STEM

Promoting STEM learning early can make a difference in the future of the industry. Providing your child with books, games, and activities that make learning STEM subjects fun. You could also take them to science museums, planetariums, and technology fairs to spark their interest. There are also opportunities in your day-to-day life to discuss STEM topics. For example, whilst you are cooking, you can discuss some of the chemical processes that are involved, or on a starry night, you can share some facts about astronomy to get them interested in the field. 

It is also possible to enrol your child in after-school programmes, summer camps and online courses focused on STEM subjects.
