Turning Insights and Ideas
Into Top-Tier Grades

Does your child have great ideas but struggles to get them down on paper? Or perhaps they are writing pages of notes, but still missing the top grade boundaries?

Many students lose marks not because they lack knowledge, but because they lack the academic structure to present it. We provide the framework to turn “good points” into top-tier answers.

The “Subjectivity” Trap

Unlike Maths, where an answer is clearly right or wrong, English can feel confusingly subjective. Many students fall into the trap of “retelling the story” rather than analyzing the text, or they struggle to decode archaic language like Shakespeare, leading them to disengage completely.

The Hidden Barrier

The Cost of “Waffling”

Without a clear structure, students often write too much irrelevant information (“waffling”) while missing the specific analytical points examiners need.

If they don’t learn the ‘code’ of exam technique now, they miss out on a vital skill set. The ability to structure a clear, analytical argument is the secret to securing higher marks in History, Geography, and Science.

In fact, the report ‘Read All About It’ by GL Assessment (2020) confirms a direct correlation between strong literacy skills and higher grades across all GCSE subjects.

The Process

How We Get Results

1

The Assessment

We review a piece of their writing to identify if the issue is vocabulary, structure, or analysis. This gives us a baseline beyond just a “grade.”

2

The Strategy

We assign a subject-specialist tutor and place your child in a cohort that matches their exam stage (KS3, GCSE, or A-Level).

3

The Live Sessions

Weekly, interactive sessions focused on deconstructing texts, “exploding quotes,” and planning essays live with the tutor.

4

The Review

Ongoing feedback on written work turns “vague ideas” into “precise arguments,” building confidence for the real exam.

Moving From “Reading” to “Analysing”

Many students believe you “can’t revise” for English. This is a myth. Success in English isn’t about memorising a novel; it is about mastering the skill of critical analysis.

Top grades go to the students who can peel back the layers of a text, understand the writer’s intent, and structure a coherent argument under time pressure.

Key Insight

“Examiners don’t give marks for knowing the plot. They give marks for analysing why the writer wrote the plot. We teach the specific frameworks that make this shift possible.”

It’s Never Too Late

Rebuilding Confidence & Results

We can help your child find their voice and jump grades, even if they currently say they “hate reading” or find Shakespeare impossible to understand.

Demystifying the Language

Our tutors and coaches are specifically trained to demystify complex, classic texts that often feel inaccessible to students. We break down dense extracts into manageable, logical “chunks,” allowing your child to see the patterns and meanings behind the words.

A Repeatable Strategy for Exam Success

Confidence comes from knowing exactly how to respond when the exam clock starts. We replace exam anxiety with a clear and repeatable writing strategy. By mastering specific frameworks, students learn how to articulate their ideas with authority and secure the marks they deserve.

The Transformation

More Than Just an English Lesson

Structured Thinking

We teach essay frameworks and planning techniques SO THAT your child never freezes at a “blank page” again.

Critical Analysis

We move students beyond simple storytelling SO THAT they can identify sophisticated language techniques and secure the higher marks.

Articulate Confidence

We build their vocabulary and speaking skills SO THAT they can express their ideas with authority, both in exams and future interviews.

What our scholars say…

  • It was difficult at the beginning because you already have so much to do at school, and it feels like you don't have time, but you actually get used to it. I've moved up a set in my French and my Maths. I'm actually looking forward to my GCSEs!

    Abi, age 15
  • I've learned that learning means you have to push yourself...no one can make you learn...It's a bit like sports...If you don't push yourself, you won't get better...I'd say I have improved because I'm making more of an effort, and I'm better at organising my time and my homework.

    Shaun, age 12
  • It's a good programme...you start to see that actually you are quite clever...because now in class I understand things and I don't get worried when we have a new topic because I know that if I just focus I will be able to understand it.

    Gabrielle, Age 11
  • I started with GT Scholars in Year 8, and back then, I thought of myself as an average student. By Year 11, I found myself in the top set. I ended up getting mostly 8s & 9s - basically some of the best grades in my school for my GCSEs. The support has been phenomenal.

  • My tutors really helped me improve in Maths.
I was initially predicted a 5 for my GCSE Maths... I didn't think I could do better than that.
I ended up getting a 7, which I am extremely proud of.

FAQs

[ENGLISH]
  • Does your tutoring cover both English Language and Literature?

Yes. We believe the two are deeply linked. Our tutors help scholars with the technical precision of English Language (grammar, rhetoric, and composition) as well as the thematic and historical analysis required for English Literature. We adapt the focus based on whether your child is following a UK-style curriculum or the US Common Core framework.

  • How do you handle the different spelling and grammar conventions (UK vs. US)?

When you join our tutoring programmes, you will be assigned with a specialist tutor that is experienced with the examinations that you are preparing for. If your child is preparing for US-based assessments, your tutor will be experienced with this, and they will focus on American English spelling and grammatical conventions. If your child is preparing for UK GCSEs or A-Levels, we ensure they adhere to British English standards. Our tutors make sure that scholars understand which voice and style is required for their specific exam.

  • My child writes well but loses points on analysis - how do you fix that?

This is one of the most common gaps we close. Writing fluency and analytical precision are different skills. We teach our scholars to move from describing what a text says to explaining how and why it works – this is the shift that earns top marks in English and stands out in university and college admissions essays. It’s a learnable skill, and most students see a measurable difference within a few focused sessions.

  • Which UK exam boards and curricula do you cover for English?

Our tutors are experienced with all major UK exam boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR) and tailor the strategies to the specific syllabus and marking schemes of those boards.

  • Can GT Scholars help my child score higher on the US SAT Reading and Writing sections?

Yes. The SAT’s Evidence-Based Reading and Writing sections reward exactly the skills we develop – precise comprehension, analytical argument, and clear written expression. Our tutors help students move beyond surface-level reading to genuinely interrogate texts, identify author intent, and construct tightly evidenced responses. These skills transfer directly to AP English Language, AP Literature, and the kind of writing that earns high scores on college application essays too.

  • Can you help my child write a compelling USA college application essay?

Yes. Your child’s college application will require the use of authentic voice, structural clarity, and purposeful language. The skills that your child will build through English tutoring, can support them with writing a great college essay. English tutoring can help our scholars find their story, sharpen their argument, and write with the confidence that selective admissions readers immediately notice.

If your goal is to build as much support as possible for US College admissions, we recommend that you consider 1-to-1 mentoring to support your application. Whether your child is applying to Ivy League schools or competitive state universities, your child’s mentor can help them with an admissions essay that genuinely represents their best thinking.
