Physics Tutoring
Don’t Just Learn the Formulas.
Build the Analytical Mindset of a Physicist.
Physics is the gateway to some of the world’s most competitive degrees and careers. We help ambitious students bridge the gap between scientific theory and mathematical application to secure top-tier grades.
The “Application Gap” in Physics:
Why Knowing the Theory Isn’t Enough
Physics is unique among the sciences. The skills that secure top grades in other subjects often fail here because the assessment criteria are fundamentally different:
- 🧬 Biology rewards Memory & Recall
- 🧪 Chemistry rewards Abstract Logic & Exact Precision
- ⚡ Physics rewards Mathematical Application
Many students find themselves “stuck” at a B or C grade, not because they don’t understand the concepts, but because they lack the specific fluency to translate written problems into mathematical formulas under time pressure.
The 40% Rule: Maths in Disguise
It is a common misconception that Physics is just another science subject. In reality, it is an applied mathematics discipline. If a student treats it like Biology, they are studying for the wrong exam.
A “Mathematical Ceiling” on Grades
“Ofqual regulations state that in Physics exams, a minimum of 40% of the marks are awarded for mathematical skills. This is significantly higher than Biology (10%) or Chemistry (20%).”
If a student’s maths skills are shaky, their Physics grade hits a ceiling that no amount of flashcards or revision notes can break through.

The “Invisible” Hurdle
Why do hard-working students often hit a ceiling in Physics? The data points to three specific barriers.
Mathematical Fluency
Approximately 40% of marks in A-Level Physics require mathematical calculation. If a student struggles with Algebra, their Physics grade is capped before they even start.
The Critical Window
Physics is hierarchical. A “concept gap” in Year 9 (e.g. rearranging formulas) compounds over time, making Year 11 topics like Electromagnetism impossible to grasp without intervention.
The Competitive Edge
Physics is one of the hardest subjects to secure an A* at A-level. Achieving this grade signals to top-tier universities that a student possesses a high level of analytical resilience.
The “Abstraction” Barrier:
Seeing the Invisible
In Biology, you can see a cell under a microscope. In Chemistry, you can watch a reaction change colour.
But in Physics, you must visualise forces you cannot see—from magnetic fields to kinetic energy. This is why rote learning fails here; you cannot memorise what you cannot visualise.
Scientific Fluency
“The Institute of Physics highlights that deep progress depends on a student’s ability to build ‘Mental Models’ of abstract concepts – This is known as ‘Scientific Fluency’. Without this, students cannot solve the complex ‘application’ questions required to achieve top grades.”
— Institute of Physics, ‘Supporting Physics Teaching’ (2020)
The Ultimate Signal of Academic Rigour
Physics doesn’t just lead to becoming a Physicist. It is the foundational language of the modern world. From the algorithms driving High-Frequency Trading to the structural logic of Architecture, a solid grounding in Physics is the prerequisite for some of the most desirable career paths of the next decade.
According to the Russell Group’s ‘Informed Choices’ guidance, Physics is a critical gateway subject for the “Hard Sciences” and Engineering. Dropping Physics early can close off more technical and mathematical degree options—from Aerospace Engineering and Robotics to Quantitative Finance—than almost any other subject.

The GT Scholars Approach:
Bridging the “Fluency Gap”
We do not simply reteach what was covered in school. We use a structured, three-pillar framework designed to build the specific cognitive skills required for top grades in Physics.
1. Visual Modelling
The “See It” Phase.
Before we touch the calculator, we teach students to “sketch the forces.” This builds the Mental Models required to solve abstract problems.
2. Mathematical Fluency
The “Solve It” Phase.
We target the specific algebraic skills needed for Physics, ensuring students can manipulate formulas under time pressure without panic.
3. Metacognitive Review
The “Refine It” Phase.
We don’t just mark answers. We analyse why a mistake was made—was it a Concept Error or a Calculation Slip? This builds resilience.
Success Without The Stress
Transform Your Child’s Relationship with Physics
Many students believe you have to be a “born genius” to excel in Physics. This is a myth. We help students achieve top-tier grades by teaching the underlying logic, not just rote memorisation.
Who is this for?
We don’t need your child to be getting straight As right now. We only ask for one thing: A willingness to try. If they are ready to put in the effort, we can provide the roadmap to the grade.
Even if they “hate” Maths
We strip back the fear of calculation. By connecting the maths directly to real-world physics concepts, we turn “scary algebra” into a practical tool they know how to use.
Even if they have missed topics
Missed a term in Year 9 or 10? No problem. Our diagnostic checks identify these specific gaps so we can plug them before they become an issue in the final exam.
Even if they are currently a Grade 5
A Grade 8 or 9 is not out of reach. With the right exam technique and “Mark Scheme Fluency,” we regularly see students jump 2–3 grades in a single academic year.

FAQs
[PHYSICS]
-
Which UK exam boards and curricula do you cover for Physics?
Our tutors are experienced with all major UK exam boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR) and tailor the strategies to the specific syllabus and marking schemes of those boards.
-
Is this tutoring suitable for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Physics?
Absolutely. We support both IB Physics Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). Our tutors help students navigate the core syllabus, the additional higher-level (AHL) material, and provide critical guidance on the Internal Assessment (IA) data analysis.
-
Does my child need strong Maths before starting Physics tutoring with you?
Not necessarily. Some Maths fluency helps, but the two subjects reinforce each other more than most families realise. Our tutors identify where Maths gaps are creating Physics problems and address both simultaneously. Many students find Physics actually strengthens their Maths – because it gives abstract concepts real-world meaning. We meet your child where they are and build both skill sets together in a way that accelerates progress across both subjects.
-
How do you help students with "long-answer" and "explanation" questions?
Physics isn’t just about calculations; it’s about articulating concepts. We teach students how to structure “six-mark” or “free-response” answers using clear, logical steps and the correct scientific terminology. This is essential for both UK A-Levels and the US AP Physics FRQs.
-
My child is preparing for exams and they keep losing marks on calculation questions - what's going wrong?
Usually, the challenge isn’t the Maths itself – it’s the reasoning behind the calculation. In Physics, students often lose marks by applying formulas without fully understanding which one to use, how to rearrange it, or how to approach multi-step problems that require more than one concept.
Our tutors address this systematically, rebuilding core understanding so your child can confidently tackle unfamiliar questions. This is often the key difference between a 3 and a 5 in AP Physics, or moving from a 6 to an 8 in GCSE Maths – and it’s entirely achievable with the right targeted support. -
How does strong Physics preparation help my child get into top US Engineering programs?
It sends exactly the right signal. For MIT, Caltech, Carnegie Mellon, and Georgia Tech, a strong Physics record – through AP Physics C or equivalent – tells admissions readers your child can think mathematically under pressure and handle rigorous abstraction. Beyond admissions, students with genuine Physics fluency consistently outperform peers in foundational Engineering and CS courses. We build that depth now, while there’s still time to close any gaps before applications.
