82% of Parents Are Struggling With Burnout – Here’s What We’re Doing About It

Financial Freedom Webinar Parents What's new?

Parenting is like a rollercoaster ride – full of highs and, let’s be real, a few loops along the way. From celebrating your child’s first steps to supporting your teen’s emotional needs – being a parent is an adventure unlike others. Parents face a multitude of pressures on a daily basis and these challenges can sometimes feel overwhelming, leading to what experts refer to as parental burnout.

Parental burnout is a major concern that can affect the well-being of both parents and children. And so, in this blog, we’ll explore the significance of the Parent Hub, the research-backed strategies for addressing parental burnout, and how our platform incorporates these findings to empower parents on their journey towards resilience and well-being.

Parental Burnout And Its Effects

Recent research paints a stark picture, with a staggering 82% of UK parents experiencing parental burnout and 46% having anxiety. In addition to this, one in five parents currently struggles with poor mental health and one in five working adults, including parents, had to take time off work in the past year due to poor mental health.

One parent bravely shared, “I feel like I’m crumbling under the pressure… I don’t know what to do.” It’s a sentiment echoed by countless others who feel like they’re barely keeping their heads above water.

This is just the tip of the iceberg – Further research has shown that parental burnout has led to lack of energy and motivation, decreased patience, overwhelming exhaustion, emotional distance from children, and a sense of ineffectiveness in parenting. These stats highlight the struggles parents face in today’s world. From feeling overwhelmed to dealing with mental health issues, it’s clear that parenting can be really tough. Therefore, let’s take a look at a few research-backed suggestions to address these challenges and support parents effectively.

Prioritise Making Time For Yourself

In these challenging times, it’s important to prioritise self-care. Practices like maintaining a routine, engaging in enjoyable activities, and connecting with nature can help alleviate stress and promote well-being. Additionally, supporting others in need can provide a sense of purpose and connection, contributing to both personal and community resilience. By taking care of ourselves and each other, we can navigate through difficulties with strength and compassion. Research based on self-determination theory suggests that when people are kind to themselves, they’re more likely to feel in control of their lives, which helps reduce burnout. The upside to this is that Parent Hub provides resources and support to help parents prioritise self-care. From tips on maintaining routines to strategies for connecting with nature, we offer practical guidance to promote well-being.

Participate In Parenting Programmes

Parenting programmes provide invaluable support to parents by equipping them with knowledge and skills to enhance their children’s well-being. These programmes cover various topics such as children’s mental health, effective treatment methods, and fostering harmony within the household. By participating in programmes like Parent Hub, parents gain valuable insights into understanding and addressing their children’s needs, promoting their social and academic development. By empowering parents, these programmes play a crucial role in improving family dynamics and overall child outcomes.

Practice Self-Compassion

Research by BMC Public Health in 2024 indicates that both self-compassion and concern for others can play crucial roles in reducing burnout among parents. Two studies have highlighted these findings, underscoring the importance of caring for oneself and showing compassion towards others. Prior research has consistently shown that both of these factors – self-compassion and concern for others – contribute to promoting overall well-being. By practising self-compassion and extending care towards others, caregivers can alleviate the risk of burnout and maintain their mental health. In other words, when people show concern for others, it makes them feel more connected, which also helps reduce burnout. So, caring about yourself and others can make a big difference in preventing burnout and feeling better overall.

Talk To Other Parents

A study done on UK Parents showed that the first step to helping burnout is understanding that you’re not the only one snapping at your kids or leaving them in front of the TV all day. It’s essential for parents to talk about parental burnout openly. Do not drown in it in solitude and isolation. It is vital to talk to people who will listen without judgement assist you in overcoming challenges.

Parental burnout is more common than many parents realise, with up to 5 million parents experiencing it each year. Talking openly about it can help normalise the experience, reducing feelings of shame and stigma. By discussing parental burnout openly, parents can seek support and work towards improving their well-being and that of their families. By joining the Parent Hub community, parents can engage in conversations about parental burnout openly, reducing feelings of shame and stigma.

Practising Mindfulness

Mindfulness can actually make a big difference in how parents handle stress and avoid burnout. By encouraging a kinder outlook on themselves and cutting down on worries, mindfulness can be a game-changer for overwhelmed parents. So, when life throws curveballs, practising mindfulness might just be the secret sauce to keeping parental burnout at bay. Especially in difficult times, a little mindfulness can go a long way in helping parents stay balanced and grounded. Additional tips on how to tackle parental burnout can be found in this article on our website.

Why is Parent Hub important?

At GT Scholars, we understand the unique struggles that parents face and the toll burnout can have on their well-being. This is why we have created the Parent Hub, which is dedicated to providing comprehensive support and resources to help parents navigate these challenges effectively.

Parent Hub serves as a vital resource for parents facing burnout and seeking support in various aspects of their lives. We understand that parenting is not just about raising children; it’s also about taking care of oneself. Through our platform, parents can access a wealth of resources, workshops, and community support to address burnout, enhance their well-being, and strengthen family dynamics.

Our community provides a supportive environment where parents can connect, share experiences, and find solace in knowing that they are not alone. 7 Reasons to Teach Your Child About Investing

7 Reasons to Teach Your Child About Investing

Financial Freedom Webinar Parents What's new?

As parents, we all want our children to have a successful financial future and the best way to do that is to teach them how to invest. We want them to be financially independent and to be clever with the way they manage their money.

We are invested in their future success, which is why we are willing to go the extra mile to make sure our children do well at school; why we invest in tutoring and mentoring programmes, and do whatever we can to make sure they succeed at everything they do.

However, part of making sure our children are successful is to plan for their financial future and teach them how to manage their finances!

Although there are many ways to do this, setting up an investment account for your child can be one of the best ways to teach your child about investing in the financial markets and ultimately making a huge difference in your future and your child’s future.

With that being said, here are 7 reasons why your child should learn about investing:

1. The Sooner They Learn to Invest the Better

It is important that you teach your child about investing from a young age. It is even better when you start an investment account when your children are born. They’ll get back more when they start earlier because investing works on compound interest that continues to increase over the years!

We’ll break it down here to show you just how important it is to start early:

If you invest £200 per month, from your child’s birth, every single month, for 40 years, they could retire with £1.2 Million in the bank

But if you don’t and they only start investing the same amount per month in their 30s, they’d only have around £41,000 by the age of 40.

This is the power of the difference that we, as parents, can make in our children’s lives and why we at GT Scholars are so passionate about teaching young people about the importance of investing from an early age!

2. Investing Is Better Than Saving

There are a few reasons why it is better for our children to invest than to save. The biggest difference between savings and investing is that they’ll make a significant amount more when they invest money because they’ll gain interest whereas they won’t when they save.

Again, as time passes the difference between the amount they’ll get from an investment versus the amount they’ll get from saving becomes more significant.

Let’s take our calculation from earlier; if we invest £200 per month for 40 years at a 10% compound interest rate, we’ll have £1.2Million in the bank. But if you take the same amount and put it away in a savings account every month, then you’ll have £96,000.

It may not seem like a huge difference but as time passes, your investment returns end up being a lot more than your savings. While saving is great for short-term goals, investing is what will set you apart in the long run.

3. They Won’t Have to Work for Every Penny

We want to empower young people at GT Scholars. This means that we want to show parents how they can teach their children to earn smart. Investing allows them to do this because compound interest values time more than long hours do so they’ll knock off years of hard work when they invest.

What do we mean by that? The amount that our children can get in return for their investment is much higher than they could potentially earn in their work one day.

Investing is like making money while you’re sleeping. By investing, our children get to earn an income that they work for while accumulating a significant amount of money on the side.

This is exactly why we at GT Scholars believe it is important for parents to learn how to teach their children about investing.

4. It’ll Allow Them to Plan Ahead

When our children are young, they’re hardly thinking about their long-term financial goals. This is something that we as parents should be putting in place so that we can teach them how to focus on these goals as they get older.

So what would these long-term goals look like?

It may sound odd but teaching your child to think about their retirement plan from the age of 10 is likely to help them succeed at reaching their financial goals for their retirement as adults. Investing helps them to do that.

Additionally, although it’s not always predictable, our children can plan long-term investments so that they can estimate their net worth after a period of time. This means that they will know exactly what their earning potential is, in any given amount of time.

They can then work towards increasing this or continue at the same rate if they’re happy with their financial progress.

5. They Won’t Be Tied Down to a Location

We live in a world where many people want flexibility in their lives and in their jobs. Investing gives them this. By teaching our children how to invest, we give them the option to work from and live anywhere they want to.

This is because investing can be done from anywhere and that allows you to travel and continue investing in the financial markets, no matter where you are in the world. At GT Scholars, we believe in opportunities, young people who learn to become successful investors will be open to an array of opportunities.

They get to travel if they want to and explore so many more options than what is available to them in just one location. This also gives them the freedom to choose a career that involves more travel.

We can teach our children about the value of flexibility and experience and how investing can help them to achieve that goal.

6. It’ll Give Them the Freedom to Follow Their Dreams

We all want our children to have the freedom to follow their dreams. One of our biggest goals at GT Scholars is to help all young people to reach their goals and dreams regardless of the resources they have available to them. This is where starting a children’s investment fund for your child from a young age will help them build up the funds they need to achieve many of their goals.

The reality is that many young people struggle to pursue their goals and dreams due to a lack of finances. There are so many students who want to study further, or who want to travel but they just don’t have the financial means to do so.

Investing gives them the opportunity to think ahead and plan for their future, giving them the financial freedom they need to do what they’re passionate about. Whether that means going to a top university or becoming an athlete.

Investing gives our children the chance to build a significant amount of money for their future.

7. They can retire early

Wouldn’t it be a dream come true if our children could retire when they wanted to? None of us wants our children to work hard for the rest of their lives. Being smart about our children’s financial future can help them to retire at an early age.

When they simply put money away in savings in the hopes of successfully retiring one day, they are earning no interest and they only get what they put in. This means it’ll take them much longer to save up enough money to retire compared to if they had an investment.

This is because when they invest to retire, it allows them to make money on top of what they earn and that money gains interest, giving generous returns at a younger age. This allows them to retire at a much younger age too.

By teaching our children to start investing at a young age, we are boosting their financial future and giving them the opportunity to prepare well for retirement one day.

The Bottom Line

Isn’t it great to know that our children can have a sound financial future? That they can live their dreams, have flexibility where they live and work, and retire early? All we need to do is give them the tools they need to become young investors!

Young People and Entrepreneurship

Young People and Entrepreneurship

Financial Freedom Webinar Parents What's new?

The importance of entrepreneurship in the economy cannot be stressed enough. It also goes hand in hand with innovation, which would be nonexistent if not for entrepreneurship.  The benefit of having a generation that stands for the alleviation of bigotry, oppression and inequality comes with the responsibility of being more accommodating and progressive as a society. This means that as a society, we should be mentoring young people and informing them of all the available study and career options, so they can make an informed decision. Living in a world driven by technology, young people can access information on demand and reach a huge audience if they had the need to. Entrepreneurship is a viable career option for young people to consider.

Entrepreneurship Boosts the Local Economy
Economic development is powered by entrepreneurship.  A weak economy can be improved by encouraging entrepreneurship. It is also a great aid to lower the unemployment rate and allows income to be circulated within communities, in turn, empowering those communities. It has a positive effect on the development of communities and changes the social structure of a community. A stronger economy will enable more people to become homeowners, improve the quality of education young people receive. The overall quality of living standards will also improve. Furthermore, entrepreneurship can provide services and products that were not accessible in the past, creating wealth for the community as well as themselves.

Teaching entrepreneurial skills to young people
Entrepreneurship as a subject is the perfect balance between problem solving, creative thinking and business studies. The world is in need of graduates who are open-minded in approaching problems and who can come up with innovative solutions. Most importantly, they must be able to take charge when it comes to putting their ideas into action.   Most schools focus on traditional career choices when informing children of the various options. Entrepreneurship should in fact also be seen as a popular career choice, just like being a doctor, lawyer, teacher and architect.

Nurturing entrepreneurial traits
Great problem-solving skills are one trait that no entrepreneur can go without. Teaching young people entrepreneurship will develop their problem-solving skills. They learn to identify problems, discuss them and then try to come up with solutions. They learn to consider whether their solution will be viable by weighing up the pros and cons of the situation, but most importantly, it teaches young people to make decisions and be proactive about them. You can develop your child’s problem-solving skills by creating mock examples of typical client vs supplier problems and discussing possible solutions and consequences.

Determination
Another must-have entrepreneurial trait is determination.  This is one of the key factors that make an entrepreneur successful.  More often than not, entrepreneurs are faced with a lot of setbacks.  Success comes from not giving up hope when setback after setback is experienced. Young people will learn that hard work will eventually pay off and it will also teach them not to take the easy way out when they find something difficult, but rather to persevere and put in extra effort to be successful. A great way to help your child be more determined is to set challenging but reachable goals and act as a mentor who encourages them to reach their goals.

Managerial skills are important
Allow your child to become involved in organising fun days and events within the community.  This will create an opportunity to work alongside group leaders, be present at team meetings and gain valuable managerial skills. By becoming involved in such an event, young people can also learn how to manage responsibility and possibly delegate. Most importantly, assisting at events will give young people a perspective on their strengths and also their weaknesses, helping them to identify the areas they can improve on. It will also introduce the idea of making an income by the means of sales.

Money Smart
Being smart about your finances is another important entrepreneurial trait that can be taught to young people. It would be ideal if every learner could learn how to manage money. Learning basic accounting and bookkeeping skills is beneficial for learners not only in their future entrepreneurial endeavours, but also in managing their own personal finances better. Apart from accounting in school, young people can be motivated to save part of their allowance.  Assist your child in creating a budget that makes provisions for saving. A challenge to double his savings can also be introduced, for example, buying stock and selling it at a profit.

The importance of good language use
Many entrepreneurs have mastered the art of good language use. How a potential sale is approached and handled can either make or break the deal. The way we address a certain problem or deal with a difficult customer can influence our business reputation in a positive or negative way. It is not only important to be aware of what we say to people but also how we say it. Teaching young people to communicate with people who are different in age and cultural backgrounds will help learners be more effective in their communities and may contribute to career and business success in the future. This skill is also important for assertiveness and being an effective leader.

To be an entrepreneur, one must also be a leader.  You can motivate and inspire your child to become a good leader by being a role model. There are also various fun team activities that young people can participate in. This will also teach them the value of teamwork and give them the opportunity to rise as a leader and deal with possible conflicts that might arise.
