Here are a few opportunities for young people who want to explore a career in this industry.

The Young Journalists’ Academy
The Young Journalists’ Academy is a unique week-long programme aimed at inspiring and training the newsmakers of tomorrow. In partnership with some of the world’s leading media organisations, the YJA gives aspiring journalists the skills and the contacts they need to kick-start their careers in the media. The academy takes place in the summer where young people will focus on honing their skills as a journalist and take a step into the world of publishing. Transforming Hidden Talent Programme
Media Trust’s Transforming Hidden Talent programme creates amazing opportunities for young people in London who are interested in the media and creative industries. By connecting 16-25 year olds with top organisations, the programme gives an inside view of what it’s like working in the media industry. Each young person is also matched with an experienced professional working in the creative or media industry for one-to-one personalised career support. BBC iReporter
The new interactive BBC iReporter game gives young people aged 11 to 18 the chance to take on the role of a journalist in the BBC newsroom. It is a “choose your own adventure” game, created by Aardman Animations, which challenges you to make your own decisions on which sources, political claims, social media comments and pictures should be trusted as you contribute to the day’s news output. The GT Scholars Programme is an after-school programme that focuses on social mobility, growth mindset and helping young people to achieve their aspirations. In the Know – Activities to sharpen your writing skills!

Writing skills such as creating original content, using good grammar and having a varied vocabulary will be indefinitely useful to young people. With a well-honed skill and a strong grasp of the language, they will almost certainly excel at their exams and assignments, not to mention university assignments and work reports in the future. Here are three activities that will help them to sharpen their writing skills.

Arvon Creative Writing Courses
Arvon offers creative writing residential courses and retreats, led by highly acclaimed writers, spanning poetry to playwriting, songs to screenplays, fact to fiction, starting to finishing. They also offer grants to help with course fees for those who need it. Any young person, regardless of writing experience, can immerse themselves in the creative process, be inspired by experienced writers and release their imaginative potential. The Wells Festival Competition
The Wells Festival offers a Young Poets competition for young people aged 16 and over. The entry fee is £3 and poems may be on any subject and must not exceed 35 lines in length. The winner will receive £150 plus a year’s subscription to The Poetry Society. Applications are now open until the 30th of June 2018 and can be submitted online or via post. Find out more here.

Writing Challenge App
The Writing Challenge App allows students to enjoy writing through a fun and interactive game. The app helps the student get started and then provides a prompt every minute to add new ideas, words, characters, sentences, places or actions to the plot. Young people who have a hard time getting started with creative and academic writing assignments will enjoy the fast-paced, game-like setup of this app. The app costs about £2 and is available for iOS and Android.
