In this week’s newsletter, we connect you to the events and services that can help young people improve their skills and move past these challenges. Here are our top events’ for getting connected with like-minded people who can add value to your lives.

Help your child Ace their Exams!
The GT Scholars Ready, Set, Go workshop is back! On Saturday 14th March from 10am to 4pm at Goldsmiths University in London, we’ll be running our hugely popular workshop designed to improve study skills and exam technique. This full-day workshop aims to help young people excel at exams by improving their study skills, time management, and making use of growth mindset techniques. As usual, tickets for this workshop are on the waiting list with priority tickets for scholars on one of our programmes. You can find out more here.

Beyond A-levels
On Thursday 12th March Dunottar school will be hosting an event titled ‘Beyond A-levels’ from 6pm – 8pm for young people aged 16 -18 years at the school main hall in Reigate, Surrey. This free event will be presented by four guest speakers providing insight into alternatives to University such as, pursuing an alternative career, earn as you learn opportunities and making the most of work experience. Projects Abroad UK will also showcase the variety of volunteering, internship, adventure and ethical trips available with them. You can find out more here.

JLC Workshop: Debate and Public Speaking Skills
The Junior Lawyers’ Club will be running Saturday workshops and holiday clubs for children in age groups 8-11 and 11-14 at the Mansel Road Centre, Wimbledon. They teach the key skills of being a lawyer through fun, fast-paced activities and challenges. Each workshop is based on a different theme, developing an interest in a range of topics and confidence in public speaking. Workshops are led by a panel of skilled actors and lawyers. British Science week 2020
British Science Week takes place between 6-15 March 2020 for a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths. Events take place in a range of locations, from museums, schools and universities to shopping centres, business premises, libraries and theatres. The theme for this year is ‘Our diverse planet.’ The activity packs contain lots of activities on this theme for three different stages: early years, primary, and secondary covering topics like biological diversity, social diversity, to the diversity of knowledge. These packs aim to encourage young people to think about everyday discoveries and how they affect their lives by exploring science in the world all around us. Find out more here.

Peckham Youth Market
Thinking of boosting your entrepreneurial skills? The Makeshift foundation is hosting ‘The Made in Peckham Youth Market’ where young people, between the ages of 16-25 are able to sell their services and products to the community at the Peckham Levels, 95A Rye Lane in London on Saturday 7th March 2020 from 1pm to 6pm. This event is a great opportunity for young entrepreneurs to sell, network and receive information about Make Shift Foundation’s Business Basic Workshops which provides support to young business owners. Positive thinking is the idea that you can better your life by merely thinking positive thoughts. The idea that optimism alone is enough to succeed is a challenge for young people who recognise that just thinking good thoughts cannot change the world or their future. This week’s events will shape positive attitudes into positive actions.

New Beginnings: Mother & Daughter Drama Workshop
Girl grounded London is hosting a London based drama workshop aimed at mothers and their 10-14-year-old daughters on Saturday, 22nd February 2020 from 10.15am to 11.45am at the Frampton Park Baptist Church. This event aims at exploring what it means to have a fresh start and identify areas in our lives where we can create new beginnings and set goals for ourselves. This fun, creative and inclusive workshop involves drama-based activities and discussions. Find out more here.

NewhamRising Youth Festival
The NewhamRising Youth Festival will be taking over the Stratford Circus Arts Centre, London, this half-term on 20th February 2020 from 2pm -6pm, with dance, music, fashion, debates and theatre. The festival has been produced by 10 young people aged 16-19 years old. NewhamRising will showcase both grassroots and established talent from the local area as well as across London. This free event is about the youth uniting for rewards and showing the world that we can come together for good. This event aims at positivity and unity and is for ages 10 – 18 years. A Sustainable Fashion Event
The Boiler House in London is joining the London Fashion Week for the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, 22nd and 23rd February 2020 from 11am to 6pm. At this free workshop, they will be working with upcycling practitioners. These practitioners will host workshops where you bring your old garments and upcycle them into new garments. The aim is to out actions and innovation for progress in the fashion industry at the forefront. This event is free and for young people aged 14 -18 years. Find out more here.

Life is filled with competition and teamwork, from the playground to the corporate world. This week’s In the Know is slightly different from usual – with a couple of events and a brand new programme to nurture leadership skills in young people!

GT Scholars – Inspiring Future Leaders Programme
Young people in London have so much potential but often face a wide range of challenges – this is why we’ve teamed up with the Mayor of London to launch the Inspiring Future Leaders Programme! This is a new leadership programme for boys aged 12 to 14, who have great leadership skills but are not fully achieving their potential. The 6-month programme will include skill-building days, enrichment days and 1-to1 mentoring. The programme is free to all selected participants, it’s fully funded by Mayor of London & National Lottery and starts on 20th February 2020 until July 2020. Northolt library young people’s film club
A team of local young people are hosting a screening of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire to celebrate Harry Potter day on Saturday, 8 February 2020 from 1.30pm – 3pm at the Northolt Library, Northolt. This youth-led film group aims to involve and empower local communities by getting young people to make and show their own short films. This free event will consist of several challenges that will test the participants’ magical process and daring powers of deduction. Follow the link for more information.

Nomadic Youth’s Card Club #1 – BOSS MONSTER
Nomadic Youth’s Card Club is hosting their first-ever Card Club on Sunday, 9 February 2020  from 6pm – 8pm at the Blightly Cafe’, Tottenham. At this free event, you play new and interesting card and tabletop games, starting with the incredible and epic dungeon building card game called Boss Monster! This game is inspired by 8-bit side scroller games in which players compete to build the best dungeons, luring in brave heroes between 13 -18 years. Find out more here.

With the new academic term well on its way, we have found a selection of practical, fun and interactive events that will stimulate, excite and get them off to a great start in their STEM and non STEM subjects for this year. These events are for teens interested in gaming, coding, language and Social Science subjects.

Free Coderdojo
Sunday 26 January there will be a free Coderdojo at the National Museum of Computing. This free event is for coding enthusiasts aged 7 – 17 years. The aim is to is for everyone is to learn about coding in a fun and safe environment. Experienced coders, as well as beginners, are welcome to join this event. It takes place at The National Museum of Computing, Bletchley Park, Bletchley from 10.30am – 12.30pm. Tickets can be booked at Eventbrite.

English Literature and Social Science Immersion day
A thought-provoking look into what it takes to study subjects at academic A level, for young people aged 16 -19. This immersive event focuses on Arts, Humanities and Social Science. Several languages and subject matter are on offer and participants are encouraged to choose three to focus on for the day. The event takes place at the London Academy of Excellence, Lilywhite House, High Road, London on Saturday 25 January 2020 from 08.30am – 12.30pm. Follow this link for more information

Game Design with Microsoft MakeCode Arcade and Meowbit
Young people aged 11 years and older, who are interested in game design and programming are invited to participate in this popular educational platform. This event allows the audience to receive practical knowledge in Maths and Physics by building their games. The designed games can be downloaded to Meowbit, a device similar to the Gameboy. This free event takes place Sunday 26 January from 2pm-4pm at Studio Cambridge, Station Road, Cambridge. Tickets can be booked at this link.

Welcome to 2020, the start of a new year and a new term! We have uncovered some funfilled and informative events and programmes to help you set the tone for your children’s goals and aspirations for the year ahead. It is greatly beneficial to be prepared and these events will help them discover a world of opportunity.

Free STEM Immersion Day
This event will take you on an immersive journey of discovery.  Students aged 16 -18 will be presented with a scenario that relies on their skills and knowledge of science.  There will be a variety of activities for the students to do that aim to inform them of how mathematics works in the real world.  The event takes place on Saturday 18 January 2020 at the London Academy of Excellence Tottenham,  London and starts at 8.30am. Free Philosophy Now Festival
Philosophy is the study of knowledge, reality and the world that we exist in. Explore this family-friendly event brimming with games, workshops and interesting age-appropriate debates. There are more than 30 events planned, featuring topics like the Wonderful World of Numbers, a debate about the origin of mathematics and numbers.  The event takes place on Saturday 18 January at Conway Hall, Red Lion Square, London. Creative Careers Day.
This free event is for young people aged 14 -18 years and will give them insight into the different careers they never knew existed within the visual arts industry. The afternoon will be filled with discussions, workshops, career advice and various topics such as making an exhibition, handling art and publishing. The event is on Saturday the 18 January 2020 at 12pm at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, Lambeth. For more information follow the link.

With preparations for the holiday underway, we’ve uncovered a few stimulating programmes to add to your family’s Christmas holiday itinerary. These events will add a festive cheer while educating and keeping the whole family entertained. 

Free Kids Entrepreneur Bootcamp
This inspiring event is aimed at young people aged 10 to 14 years with a passion and potential for entrepreneurship. They will gain a sense of commerce and learn invaluable skills like researching their product, competition, selling and creating products that consumers want. The first of six sessions start on Saturday 21 December from 3pm to 6pm at the London Graphics Studios, Kilburn Bridge House, Kilburn High Rd, London. Free Coding & Robotics taster workshop
Fire Tech is offering their number one Junior Coder course as an early Christmas gift to young people aged 9 to 12 years. During this course, they will gather a practical understanding of basic concepts, learn about inputs and sensors and build mazes for robot challenges.  The workshop takes place on 20 December 2019, the first session starts at 9am at the Baden-Powell House, Queen’s Gate, Kensington. Make a Christmas song.
This unique event will grab the attention of music and science enthusiasts alike. Using data science and artificial intelligence, create festive Christmas songs and jingles by remaking a classic or producing something brand new.  Auditions will take place after the workshop and the audience decides on the best song of the day. We have found some great interactive opportunities to excite and educate those curious young minds. Read on to find out more information about the Annual Dragons Den Challenge and informative sessions on gaming and the laws of physics in cartoons.

Annual Dragon’s Den Challenge 2019
Young people aged between 11 – 16 who are eager to build and improve their entrepreneurial skills will definitely enjoy the Annual Dragon’s Den Challenge taking place at Goldsmiths University tomorrow, 23rd November from 10am and 4pm.  This workshop is based on the popular TV show and young people will get the chance to develop and pitch their unique business ideas to a panel of judges. Free Kids Game Design Taster sessions
Join this fun, educational and interactive course for 9-17 year olds, who enjoy the gaming world. These young people will have the opportunity to find out what goes into the making of an exhilarating game and each student will be awarded an accredited certificate of completion which is endorsed by NCFE. The event takes place on 30th November at the Software Academy on Cricklewood Broadway in London. The first session starts at 2:30pm and the second session at 4pm. Cartoon Science
Explore the laws of physics in the real world versus the laws of physics cartoons during this exciting one-hour demonstration for the whole family. The free event is co-hosted by the Institute of Physics and Science Made Simple on the 30th November at the Institute of Physics on Caledonian Road London. In recognition of Global Entrepreneurship Week coming up on the 18th and the 24th of November, we have found a few great opportunities to develop your entrepreneurial skills, presentation and team working skills that will prepare young people for the future.

Annual Dragon’s Den Challenge 2019
This exhilarating workshop gives young people aged 11-16 a taste of what it takes to be an entrepreneur. The workshop is based on the world-famous TV Show and will involve them coming up with a business idea and pitching it to a judging panel. Young people joining in on the fun will gain hands-on experience in entrepreneurship and will develop their team working, presentation and time management skills. This year’s event will take place on Saturday 23rd November at Goldsmiths University in New Cross from 10am – 4pm. Engineer Your Future
If you have an interest or the ability to be a big-thinker, a problem solver and someone who has a passion to change the world with innovative ideas, then the Science Museum on Exhibition Road is a great place to visit this coming week. Entrance is free and is suitable for young people aged 11 to 15 years. There are many exciting activities to keep you entertained and learn all about Engineering, from designing your own space rover to playing various games to enhance those scientific skills. The 2019 Language Show
Europe’s largest annual language show has returned to Olympia for its 31st year with a variety of free talks, taster classes in many different languages and exhibitors who will share tools on the best way to learn new languages. This workshop will help young people interested in language develop the skills to help find the best career path for them. This event is free for all young people under the age of 17 and registration is only required for those above this age. Dragon’s Den Challenge 2019!
Global Entrepreneurship Week is coming up and that means it’s time for our Annual Dragon’s Den Challenge! This event is definitely one of our most popular workshops, building presentation skills, entrepreneurial skills, team working skills and communication skills for the young people that join us! Southwark Showcase
Join the Southwark Community for a day of interactive fun for the whole family where you can enjoy performances in theatre, film and dance. Enjoy the sounds of the live DJ while engaging in the interactive stations by learning more about drawing, zine making and a variety of arts and crafts. Wimbledon Art Fair
This annual 4-day fair invites the whole family to be captivated by the world of creative art. Meet the great minds behind the wonderful pieces of art and find out what goes into creating a masterpiece. This special event allows you the opportunity to explore the artist’s private studios to view their different works from ceramic art to painting. You can even discover the world of fashion and photography at this great event. The Art Fair takes place at Wimbledon Art Studios and runs from 14 to 17 November.
