In the Know – Activities to sharpen your writing skills!

Writing skills such as creating original content, using good grammar and having a varied vocabulary will be indefinitely useful to young people. With a well-honed skill and a strong grasp of the language, they will almost certainly excel at their exams and assignments, not to mention university assignments and work reports in the future. Here are three activities that will help them to sharpen their writing skills.

Arvon Creative Writing Courses
Arvon offers creative writing residential courses and retreats, led by highly acclaimed writers, spanning poetry to playwriting, songs to screenplays, fact to fiction, starting to finishing. They also offer grants to help with course fees for those who need it. Any young person, regardless of writing experience, can immerse themselves in the creative process, be inspired by experienced writers and release their imaginative potential. Their 2018 Course Programme is now open for booking. Find out more here.

The Wells Festival Competition
The Wells Festival offers a Young Poets competition for young people aged 16 and over. The entry fee is £3 and poems may be on any subject and must not exceed 35 lines in length. The winner will receive £150 plus a year’s subscription to The Poetry Society. Applications are now open until the 30th of June 2018 and can be submitted online or via post. Find out more here.

Writing Challenge App
The Writing Challenge App allows students to enjoy writing through a fun and interactive game. The app helps the student get started and then provides a prompt every minute to add new ideas, words, characters, sentences, places or actions to the plot. Young people who have a hard time getting started with creative and academic writing assignments will enjoy the fast-paced, game-like setup of this app. The app costs about £2 and is available for iOS and Android.
