Happy 2021!! We’re back in full swing and really hope that you’ve had a relaxing festive season! Even though our new year has started in lockdown, we’re still excited about upcoming online opportunities to support young people during their virtual learning experience. We definitely can’t do it without your help, so if you’re looking for ways to make a difference this year, have a quick look at what’s in the pipeline at GT Scholars in the new term!

Thank you to everyone who’s confirmed their availability so far, we’ll be in touch soon regarding a match. Fancy being a speaker at our Career Summit day?
Our first Online Careers Summit day is coming up at the end of February! In previous years our career days have truly inspired young people. It opens a world of opportunity to them, and so, we’re really looking forward to this event and hearing our volunteers’ career stories. Have you signed up to be a guest speaker yet? If you would like to be a guest speaker, please fill in this short form.

Workshop facilitator roles available!
We’re focused on bringing opportunities online for young people to continue to learn and grow whilst being at home, especially now in the light of school closures. We’d love to hear from more professionals interested in part-time workshop facilitating roles with us. If you have previous experience in facilitating workshops and have spare time to get involved,  please feel free to get in touch.

Would you like to feature in our Volunteer Spotlight?
Our spotlight video interviews really inspire people in so many ways as you have a chance to see the unique stories of parents, young people and also our amazing team of volunteers. We understand that with the covid outbreak it’s not easy to arrange physical meetings, but we would still like to continue to provide these wonderful and inspiring stories in some way. If you are interested in featuring in our next spotlight, please send me a quick email so that we can set up a meeting!

Share more about your career with young people!
We’ll be launching a new programme soon! The Careers Contact Programme will host a series of online career days. As a volunteer panellist, you’ll be able to share your career journey with young people interested in following the same career path. During the sessions, you’ll share more about your career and what to expect working in a similar role. There will also be a live Q&A session where young people will have the chance to ask you about your career. If you’d like to sign up for this volunteer opportunity, hit the reply button and we’ll get in touch.

Would you like to be a guest on our podcast?

Friends of GT Scholars Volunteers

Happy Friday! We hope you had a great week and that you have some exciting plans lined up for the weekend! Before the weekend officially starts, we would like to tell you about a few volunteer opportunities.

Event volunteers needed!
We are looking for volunteers to support us at our next event. The #GirlMeetsCode workshop will introduce girls aged 11-16 to the world of coding and will take place on Saturday the 20th of October from 10am-4pm at Launch 22 at Old Street. If you are available to help at this event please get in touch with us for more information about the workshop and how to volunteer.

Volunteer as a guest blogger
Another way to volunteer with us is to contribute to our blog. The blog is a great way to share your ideas with young people and their parents. It’s also a great way to share your thoughts about your industry or career and any lessons you’ve learned that can help our scholars. Have a look at this previous blog entry from one of our volunteers to get an idea of the blogging style.  If you don’t have time to write a blog but would still like to contribute, please send me an email and I’d be more than happy to co-write the blog with you!

Spotlight on Volunteers
Our Volunteer Spotlight interview series is our way of highlighting the amazing things that our volunteers do and sharing more about their talent, dedication and motivation for volunteering. If you’ve volunteered as a tutor, mentor or helped out at one or more of our events in the past year, we’d love to schedule an interview with you to find out more about your volunteering journey. I will be doing a round of phone calls to find our next set of volunteers for the spotlight series but please feel free to email if you’d like to get involved.

GT Scholars is a not-for-profit social enterprise and registered charity. Can you believe we’re already in November or Movember as some may call it?! I recently found out that this men’s health awareness month started off in 2003 with just 30 guys growing a mustache, and since then, it has spiraled to over 5 million Mo Bros and even Mo Sistas showing their support! Though I don’t think I’ll be wearing a fake mustache anytime soon! Anyway, enough mindless chatter, let’s get started with this week’s newsletter!

#DayofCode – An online workshop for young people!
This November we’ll be running a free 2-day coding workshop, which has been made possible by the Meet and Code 2020 Initiative, sponsored by SAP. A huge shout out to Rhys and Ahmed for sharing their expert skills with us! The workshop will introduce young people aged 11-16 to the world of coding and technology, where they will have the opportunity to design their very own mobile app! If you know of any young person or parent who’d be interested in this workshop, feel free to share this link with them!

Podcast interview anyone?
As part of our new Young Leaders programme, we’re looking for volunteers who are available to share their career stories and knowledge with young people in the video-podcast which will be led by our youth board! We’ll spend some time learning more about you and following this, some of our young people and their parents will get to ask questions live or send their questions in advance. Each interview and Q&A will last around 90 minutes, and the final edited video-podcast will be reduced to about 45 minutes. If you have some time to share about your career or life experience with our ambitious young people, please get in touch!

Volunteer Meetup – Save the date!
We’ll be hosting a virtual volunteer meetup this year! All friends of GT Scholars are welcome! This includes current volunteers, volunteer applicants and anyone interested in volunteering with young people! It would be great if you can make it! If you’d like to get involved in organising, please also feel free to get in touch. We’ll be sharing more details with you soon! For now, please pencil in Thursday 3rd December from 6pm-7:30pm into your diary.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Happy Friyay!! I hope you’re well and have been keeping warm this week? Autumn is here, and soon winter will be on our doorstep! Luckily with the recent update to the government’s safe travel list, we don’t have to face the winter all huddled up at home! You can book a flight and soak up some winter sun in the Canary Islands or even head off to Greek Island of Mykonos without having to quarantine for 14 days on return! *For now!

Can you help a fellow friend of GT Scholars?
Do you know of someone in your network who works as a professional Psychologist or have professional experience working in the Social Science field? One of our mentors was matched with a scholar that is interested in this career field, and we’re looking for someone who can give her more information about studying and working within the Psychology and Social Science field. If you know of someone who can help, please send me a quick email, and I’ll set up an introduction.

Youth board member, Laura shares her experience as a mentee!
We’ve taken a walk down memory lane looking back at some of the feedback we received from our scholars. In our latest spotlight interview, we spoke to Laura, who was on the Bright Ambitions tutoring & mentoring programme. Laura shares her story and says that tutoring helped her to improve her maths grades and that mentoring helped her tremendously with time management and planning for the future. If you have a few minutes, you can read the full interview here!

Are you InQUIZitive?
Have you taken our Volunteer Persona Quiz yet? We set up the quiz as a bit of fun for you to find out your Volunteer Persona. The quiz will only take about 2-minutes to complete, and it’s filled with a tonne of fun gifs. The questions might seem a bit random but so far, we’ve been getting it right. Feel free to let us know what you think about your result? Did we get it right? Thumbs-up or thumbs-down?! Take the quiz here.

The weekend is in the air! And apparently, right now the air is much cleaner in many parts of the world. According to the latest report from the Mayor’s office, carbon emissions have gone down by 6% in London’s ultra-low emission zone. Hopefully, when we eventually embark on maskless journeys into the city, the air we breathe will be much cleaner!

All New B-Inspired Volunteering Opportunities!
Did you know that we’re launching the new B-Inspired programme soon!? We’re very excited about running this monthly membership programme, which will include monthly coaching sessions for young people! Each coaching session will be one and a half hours long, followed by a 30 minute live Q&A with our online community. We’re looking for volunteers who can add value to these coaching sessions by sharing their skills and experience with young people. If you are interested and have spare time to get involved, please get in touch with me!

Are you interested in being part of our Advisory Board?
We have a few roles available on our advisory board and are currently looking for talented professionals with experience in the Finance, Public Relations, and Digital Marketing sector. If you believe that you can help make a difference by being part of our Advisory Board, we’d love to hear from you! If you would like to apply, please send me a quick email, and I’ll be in touch to set up a meeting so we can find out more about you and why you’d like to join the Advisory Board!

Share our latest FREE resources!
Have you had a chance to look at our latest free resources for young people? In celebration of black history month, we’ve put together a list of 20 scholarships, apprenticeships and work opportunities for young people of black heritage, or of BAME background. You are more than welcome to pass on this free downloadable resource to friends, family or any young person who might find it useful! Follow this link to get your free download.

Have a great weekend!
